A programmable logic controller (PLC) is an industrial solid-state computer that monitors inputs and outputs, and makes logic-based decisions for automated processes or machines. PennAir’s Automation engineers integrate PLC systems with other devices (HMIs, SCADA) to ensure a seamless automation process.

Advantages of PLCs:

  • Flexible with a Long Life: PLCs are robust and can survive harsh conditions including severe heat, cold, dust, and extreme moisture. Additionally, they are modular and easily programmed with an attractive ROI. 
  •  Reduced Space: PLCs are completely solid state devices and extremely compact.
  • Energy Saving: Average power consumption is 1/10th that of an equivalent relay based control.
  • Shorter Project Time: A hard wired control system can only be constructed when the task is fully defined, causing extended project timelines. However, with PLCs, the construction of the controller and wiring are independent, expediting the process.
